Dennis Jones-Jones Custom Lettering & Pin Striping, Whittier, CA (562) 696-4637. I was born in Santa Monica, CA in 1943. Moved to Pico Rivera, CA in 1954.My shop is in Whittier, CA & I live in La Habra, CA. So, I've spent all my life in So. Cal. I first started striping & lettering as a hobby in about 1957. Around 1959 I was able to get people to pay for my work. I lettered my first race car in 1959 (a dry lakes, Bonneville car). Soon after that time I got to letter the very first "jet powered" Bonneville race car (Flying Caduceus). I graduated from high school in 1962. Went to Cerritos College for 1 year studying commercial art. In Sept. of '63 I went to L.A. Trade Tech. College, Los Angeles CA., to study sign painting, under John Garrett. I completed that course in '65. I got a job at a commercial sign shop in L.A. & served my apprenticeship & became a journeyman sign painter in 1967. I worked at the sign shop until 1970 when I decided to go into business for myself, specializing in custom lettering & pin striping. During the '60's I also painted cars, motorcycles & helmets. I worked out of my house from '70 - '72 & got my 1st shop in '72 & moved to my current shop in '79 in Whittier. Over the years I've done a lot of race car work. Drag racing , dry lakes & Bonneville cars, along with many other types of race cars. I've also been able to do a lot of gold leaf & other types of leaf work over the years. I've been doing the gold leaf on all of the Pasadena Fire Dept. trucks for the past 30 years. I am into old cars, my daily driver & shop truck is a '56 Nomad. I think I can lay claim to being the fastest lettering & pin striping guy on 4 wheels. I hold the land speed record at 259 m.p.h. set in 2010 at the Bonneville Salt Flats with a top speed of 263 m.p.h. driving a Don Ferguson owned ardun powered streamliner. Now after more than 50 yrs. of custom hand painted lettering & pin striping, I still enjoy doing what used to be called sign painting & is now called an automotive art form & I still do my work the old school way, without the use of a computer. My early influences were the guys at the Barron, Roth & Kelly shop in Southgate CA. in the late 50's. |
